How to bounce back from redundancy
Finding a job after redundancy might seem daunting at first, but it could be the start of something special. Redundancy is not something to be ashamed about. It doesn't reflect badly on you and, for many, it inspires a complete change of direction.
Dust yourself off
Now that you have some spare time you can assess your options and think about what you really want from your career. There are loads of jobs out there. It's simply a matter of choosing the right work for you. Many people have used redundancy to start them on a whole new work path.
If you have been out of the workplace for a while and you're worried what prospective employers may think about the gap, don't fret. Let them know you've taken the time to work out what it is you really want. Show them you're confident that the job they are offering is what you want to do, and you're halfway there already.
Bounce back to work
First, have a think about what you enjoy doing and identify your skills. It's important to look at what you can do and how you can put your talent to use in the most rewarding way.
Once you know what you're looking for, adapt your applications and CV for each job you apply for. Detail three to four achievements that demonstrate specific skills relevant to the role; this way recruiters can quickly see how suitable you are.
There is no requirement to include the fact that you were made redundant in your CV. The redundancy conversation can be discussed in person at interview stage, but keep it simple and avoid talking about any injustice. You can download a skills-based CV template for some pointers and get more advice on how to tailor your CV in the CV section of the advice zone.
Boost your chances
At first it's tempting to apply for every job under the sun. Try not to panic though. Work out what you want from your career and consider each role carefully before you apply. If you go for jobs you have little or no interest in, you'll feel disheartened if you don't get hired, and you'll only keep looking for the right one if you do get an offer.
With so many jobseekers all looking at once, finding the best roles early gives you plenty of time to tailor your application and CV towards the employers needs. Register for our Jobs by Email to ensure that you're first in line to hear about the latest vacancies.
Don't give up
If you don't get the job you apply for, keep going. It's a competitive market, and the average job search doesn't result in a new role overnight.
If you maintain a positive, professional outlook interviewers will automatically warm to you. Try to focus on what you can do and avoid reflecting on what you used to do. Your enthusiasm will soon rub off on them and a winning career won't be far away. Good luck!
