Application questions
Can I send my application to you?
totaljobs.com is not an employment agency in the traditional sense, so we do not accept CVs or job applications by post or email. The web site is set up for you to carry out searches, and allow recruiters to match you to their positions (via your Jobseeker Profile). When you complete an application online, you are contacting the recruiter directly, in a format that they can accept and process easily.
Why haven't I had a response to my application?
When you apply for a job advertised on totaljobs.com, you are effectively emailing the advertiser. totaljobs.com does encourage our advertisers to respond to all applications, but unfortunately this does not always happen. It is always a good idea to follow up your application with an email or phone call.
As totaljobs.com is not an employment agency in the traditional sense, we do not take part in the selection process. For feedback on how your application is progressing you need to contact the advertiser. If you have used the 'Apply for this job' button, you can usually get their contact details by logging in to your 'My totaljobs' account, and clicking on the 'My applications' link. On this page will be listed all the jobs you have applied for. Click on the job title to see the details of the jobs. The advertiser's contact details are displayed at the bottom of the pop-up.
Can foreign nationals apply for jobs in the UK via totaljobs.com?
Yes, foreign nationals can apply for jobs advertised on totaljobs.com. You must, however, be legally eligible to work in the country a specific job is based in.
What does my online application look like?
When you send an online application via totaljobs.com, we attach your CV to an email and include the text of any cover letter you have written when you applied and your answer to the work eligibility question. The email also includes your email address so that the recruiter can contact you about the job.
How can I contact the recruiter about my application?
If you want feedback on how your application is progressing, you should contact the recruiter directly. You can get any contact details they have supplied with their advertisement, by clicking on the contact details text link, just below the 'Apply for this job' button, on the job details page. If you have applied online, you can get to this page easily from your 'My applications' page in My totaljobs.
Jobseeker profile questions
How will filling in a 'Jobseeker Profile' help me?
When you complete a 'Jobseeker Profile', you are storing relevant information about you, in a format that a recruiter can search on using the tools we provide them. The profile is not compulsory, but it is recommended. Recruiters can search our database to find jobseekers (you) that best match the positions they have. This way, you stand a chance of being offered a job that suits your skills, without having to look for it.
I just want to apply online, do I have to fill in the Jobseeker Profile?
You do not have to fill in a Jobseeker Profile before applying.
How do recruiters use my Jobseeker Profile?
Your profile is stored in our candidate database, and its use is controlled by you. Recruiters use a tool we offer called 'Candidate search' in which they can specify the type of candidate they are looking for, and then search the database for matches. You will only be included in the search if you have made your profile available to be searched. When recruiters find a match, they can contact the candidate.
How do I upload my CV?
You can upload your CV either by visiting the 'My totaljobs' area on the site or by clicking on 'Upload your CV'. If you are a new user, follow the prompts to create a new account. If you are an existing user, log in.
From the My totaljobs page you should click on the 'Edit profile' button, in the 'My jobseeker profile' section ('Upload your CV' will take you straight here after you have logged in). In the 'Personal details' section at the top of the 'My jobseeker profile' page, look for the CV text field and browse button. Click on the browse button and you will see a 'Choose file' window. Locate your CV on your computer and then click on 'Open'. The path to your CV will appear in the CV text field.
Complete the rest of your Jobseeker Profile and click the 'Save my profile' button at the bottom of the page. Your CV is now on our system and will allow recruiters to evaluate you for jobs they may have.
Your CV must be a MS Word (*.doc), MS Word 2007 (*.docx), Rich Text Format (*.rtf) or Acrobat (*.pdf) file and should be no larger than 200k. However, in order for your CV to be viewed by most recruiters, we do not recommend MS Word 2007 (*.docx) files. Please make sure your document is not password protected. When you originally create your document, click 'file', then 'save as', and select one of the above file types.
Problems uploading a CV for a job application
If you have problems uploading a CV when you want to apply for a job, you can paste the text into the cover letter field alongside any message to the recruiter.
How do I replace my CV?
To change your CV you should first go to the Jobseeker Profile page in you're My totaljobs account. Within the Personal details section click on the 'Change' link next to the name of the existing CV.
The existing CV will be replaced by the upload text field and Browse button. Click on the browse button and you will see a 'Choose file' window. Locate your CV on your computer and then click on 'Open'. The path to your CV will appear in the CV text field'.
Finally, scroll to the bottom of the Jobseeker Profile and click on the 'Save my profile' button. Your CV has now been updated.
I have uploaded a new CV, why can I still see my old one?
Once you have added your CV you will need to click on the 'Save my profile' button at the bottom of the page before the new CV is fully uploaded. Do make sure you fill out the rest of the profile if you haven't already done so.
Can I send you my CV?
Unfortunately, totaljobs.com does not accept CVs by email - they can only be uploaded after registering to use My totaljobs.
Why do I get a 'page not found'/'denied access' error when I try to upload my CV?
If you see either of the above errors when you try to upload your CV, it is because the programming language (JavaScript) that works this part of the site, is failing on your browser. You need to ensure that you are using a supported browser (see our browser policy) and that 'scripting' is switched on, in your browser's settings. To find out how to check this you will need to refer to your browser's online help.
My CV is more than 200KB, how can I upload it?
You must get it to below 200KB. Make sure you do not have any pictures or logos in your document, which could increase the file size. Remove these, save the document, and check to see if it is less than 200KB.
If you created your CV in Microsoft Word and have made several revisions to it, it is possible that Word is 'remembering' all your changes. This increases the file size tremendously. The solution is to copy and paste the text content of your CV into a new blank Word document and save it.
