Searching

To find the job you are looking for on totaljobs.com you will need to search for it. We offer several ways of searching for a job, depending on what motivates you in your search.

Industry search

The most prominent method is our industry search. Located on the home page, this search allows you to select an industry or sector that you wish to search within. Once you have made a selection you are shown a detailed search form for finding jobs within that sector only. Simply go through the form and select or specify the options that best describe what you are looking for. Finally, click the 'Search' button and you will be shown the results for your search.

Quick search

Also situated on the totaljobs.com home page, the quick search allows you to find jobs fast by entering keywords, such as a job title or skills, and then a location, such as a postcode or the name of a town. Simply click on the 'Go' button and you will be shown the results for your search.

Search by Location

If you are motivated by where a job is rather than what industry it is in, you can use our location search. You can enter a location either by postcode or by name (town, county or district). We have made this easier by including a suggestions list, when you begin typing. These suggestions are from the location list in our database, and do not indicate that there are jobs in that location currently on the site. If you type in a location we do not recognise, or you misspell it, we will try to match it as closely as possible.
Once you have selected your location, you can specify a distance around that location depending on how far you would be prepared to commute.

Advanced search

The advanced search allows you to specify as much information as our website permits, when searching for a job. You can select a location in the same manner as the location search (above), specify your salary or rate, choose an industry category and select the type of job you want. You can include keywords in your search and also type any words you DO NOT want to appear in your job results. This function is helpful for keywords that are often associated with roles that may not be what you are looking for. E.g. Say you are looking for jobs in design but you are not a sales person, you would enter design in the first keywords field and enter sales in the second field.

The advanced search page also displays instructions and examples for each of the options you can search by.

When you are happy with the criteria you have specified in your advanced search, simply click on the 'Search' button and you will be shown the results for your search.

Browse jobs

If you prefer to browse through our list of jobs you can do so. You can browse by location, by industry or by job role. Simply click on the 'Browse jobs' link in the navigation and make your selection. If, for example, you choose to browse by location you are shown a list of broad UK regions to look in. When you make a selection you are shown all jobs within that location. You are also shown a list of industry sectors. If you select one of these options you are shown a smaller set of results being jobs within both the location AND the industry you have selected.

If you choose to browse by job role you are shown an extensive list of roles which you can navigate through alphabetically. Simply click on the letter of the alphabet that you want and you will be shown a list of all the job roles we have that start with that letter. Click on a job role and you are shown all jobs we have for that role. You are also shown a list or broad locations which, if you select one, will show you all jobs we have within both the job role AND the location you have selected.
