Going Freelance

Working on a freelance basis offers you a much greater degree of flexibility and control over your professional circumstances, while also resulting in greater responsibility - you could be your own boss and make all the decisions about your working life.

Going freelance means setting yourself up as self-employed, and procuring work that you can do from clients' offices, from home, or in your own office (if you are lucky enough to have one). While you will sacrifice the security of a permanent role with an employer, putting yourself in control can be liberating.

So, do you have what it takes?
Although there are many different personality types that make up the successful freelance profile, there are some characteristics which are essential. You will need self-confidence and belief in your abilities, while you will also need to be focused and disciplined regarding your working time and financial budgeting.

Pros:

  • Control over your working life regarding hours, variety of work etc.
  • Potential to earn more.
  • Professional freedom and independence.

Cons:

  • No guaranteed incoming work, possibly some quiet periods.
  • Can be lonely, particularly if you are home-based.
  • Increased responsibility to succeed.
