Going freelance - registering as self employed

The Government encourages workers to register with the Inland Revenue immediately after becoming self-employed, with possible penalties of £100 for failure to do so within three months. You are able to register by phone - the helpline for the newly self-employed is on 0845 9 154515.

The Inland Revenue will ensure that tax returns are sent out. The obligation rests with you to make sure the tax office is notified that tax returns are properly filled out, even if you hire an accountant to do the paperwork for you.

If you are self-employed, it is important to remember that you must still pay National Insurance contributions as well as income tax. These can be paid by direct debit on a monthly basis, or by quarterly invoice. To register, phone the helpline on 08459 154515.

To find out more see the HM Revenue and Customs website.
