My client based in Kent is seeking to appoint an Editorial Team Leader (Medical) whose responsibilities will include:
o Manage a medical writing team
o Manage the resourcing of assigned accounts
o Provide writing/editorial support
o Contribute to the development of new business through scientific and strategic input into existing accounts and potential new business opportunities
• To coach other more junior writers and trainees within the group on both writing and scientific/strategic aspects of projects, and act as a reviewer on such projects
• To ensure that the writing aspects of all projects are completed on time, to the clients’ brief and within budget
• To maintain the highest standard of written work by implementing quality control at all stages of a project
• To liaise with designers and artworkers to generate layout of copy
• To support the group in all aspects of administrative work (e.g. letters/faxes/general admin) when required to do so

Day-to-day line management of designated medical writers (including objective setting, performance reviews and holiday approvals etc.) under the guidance of the Editorial Director
• To deputise for the Editorial Director when required
• To work closely with the Editorial Director and account team to manage the writer resourcing of designated accounts
• To provide scientific and strategic input into both new and existing accounts, in particular playing a key role in the development of publications strategy, and in the pitching process
• The Editorial Team Leader will be responsible for writing and/or editing the whole range of projects undertaken by the client, generally without guidance from other members of the writing team*
• The Editorial Team Leader is also expected to facilitate completion of all projects, from first draft through to final page proofs, by undertaking such tasks as:
• Incorporating client/author changes to draft manuscripts up to final draft stage
• Undertaking necessary reference searches
• Referencing of documents and provision of marked-up references to the client
• Selecting appropriate figures and working with editors/studio to get them redrawn
• Working with client services/editors to ensure all copyright approvals are sought from authors and publishers for any previously published figures
• Liaising with designers/artworkers on design and page layout
• Reviewing page proofs and checking colour proofs
• Updating internal team and client with editorial progress
• Travel to client meetings as and when necessary to take a writers brief or to discuss progress with a project
• The Editorial Team Leader is also expected to:
• Work with more junior members of the writing team in a coaching capacity
• Help advise on the content and flow of articles during the editorial process
• The Editorial Team Leader may also be required to provide scientific support at congresses/meetings (eg at slide previews)

Experience and qualifications • BSc (MSc) or PhD or other relevant experience
• At least 6 months’ experience as a Senior Medical Writer
• High quality writing: experience of developing the full range of materials in a variety of styles
• High level of scientific expertise across a number of therapy areas
• Previous experience of developing communications strategy
• Good organisational and verbal communication skills
• Directing less experienced writers: experience of coaching or training
• Project and personnel management
• Competence to deputise for the Editorial Director as required
• High level of client service experience from pitch, project meeting and event attendance
*Written materials may include, but are not limited to: conference materials (abstract books, slides etc.), original research manuscripts, review articles, articles for proceedings in a supplement to a peer-review journal, advisory board reports, newsletters, highlights reports, slide kits and notes, product monographs/brochures, competitor profiles, product training manuals, electronic and multimedia writing/website material, video scripting/production, PR materials.
