The environmental health service is seeking to employ an environmental health officer on a fixed term contract. The post has been created to cover for officers currently on maternity and other leave. We are looking for an officer who can contribute to all areas of the environmental health service, but who has good experience in food safety. Initially you will be required to work in our food safety team but will be expected to assist all teams workloads as necessary. Based in the historic town of Linlithgow, you will be part of a dedicated team of officers dealing with all aspects of food safety, hygiene and standards, sampling, infectious diseases, workplace safety, water quality and safety, public health, air quality, and noise control. Excellent communication skills and the desire to educate, train and motivate individuals to ensure public safety will be essential. You will also be required to participate in the out of normal working hours emergency service for which appropriate training will be given. The REHIS Diploma in Environmental Health, or equivalent, will be essential. Additional qualifications in food safety and other subjects would be desirable. The post may also be of interest to newly qualified officers. Purpose of the job To enhance and protect public health and safety by the application of a wide range of environmental health legislation. To initially work within the food safety team but also contribute towards the efficient and effective delivery of the environmental health service, in particular public health / pollution control.
The post is fixed term to cover temporary absences of officers within the service.
Job Scope The post holder will work under the direction of the Principal Environmental Health Officer. The duties are wide ranging and the post holder will require to implement a range of constantly evolving and changing environmental health statutes, legislation and corporate council issues.
As an individual and as part of a team the post holder will contribute to the development of the environmental health service in all aspects as required by internal and external demands.
Key Tasks . To work and act in conjunction with Environmental Health Officers and Technical Officers. . To carry out inspection of relevant premises, investigate complaints and carry out specific duties as directed in order to meet team plans, objectives and targets in terms of internal and external service standards. . To contribute to other workload demands in the environmental health service and assist colleagues in undertaking their duties. . To participate in the educational role of the environmental health service as appropriate. . To apply and ensure compliance with environmental health related legislation to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the people of West Lothian. . To initiate proceedings and prepare reports to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to environmental health legislation and in accordance with enforcement protocols, policies and procedures. . To maintain paper and computer based records, prepare reports and undertake appropriate surveys and research. . To undertake further study in appropriate technical subjects related to the duties of the post and service delivery requirements. . To undertake the duties of an authorised officer in terms of a wide range of environmental health related statutes. . To undertake any other appropriate duties within the environmental health service as may be required by the Environmental Health and Trading Standards Manager.

Hours of Work Monday to Friday (36 hours per week). A flexi time scheme is applicable to this post. Occasional paid overtime is required to cover certain duties, and participation in an out of hours rota.
