Manchester Rail Hub : I am currently recruiting a civil engineering Estimator with a background of general rail projects / both small and large scale. You will be required to put tenders together on schemes for the Manchester Rail Hub. The types of projects will be quite varied and you will have access too / work alongside some of the best engineers in the industry.
I have placed a Senior Estimator with this company in January, he is loving it there - "the variety off work and the resources that can be called on if any queries arise makes working life more interesting"
The Northern Way Growth Strategy1 identified three overarching transport objectives that reflect closely the conclusions on investment focus contained in the Eddington Transport Study published subsequently in December 2006:
• Better links within city regions
• Better links between city regions
• Better connections to the global gateways – airports and ports
These objectives were developed by the Northern Way into a Strategic Direction for Transport2 that examined which transport interventions in terms of policies and schemes would best serve the aim of improving radically the North’s economic competitiveness. In that report, the single most important investment needed in the North’s rail network is identified as being the Manchester Hub, because it critically affects the operation of both freight and passenger services across the whole of the
North.
The Manchester Hub is critical for the improvement of rail links between the North’s City Regions, access to the largest international airport in the North and for the growth of rail freight traffic, including to and from the North’s major ports. Resolution of the Manchester Hub problem, which is essentially the capacity constraint created by the poorly-interconnected Victorian-era rail networks in Manchester, involves capital investment.
The improved infrastructure that would result will allow the reliable operation of a much-enhanced set of services.
