But unlike university, our work influences decisions in Government, the armed forces and police, and has immediate ramifications for Britain’s well-being.

One of the UK’s intelligence services, we work alongside MI5 and MI6 in countering organised and cyber crime and terrorism. Our particular remit lies in digital and electronic media, and our large mathematical team is typically engaged on specialist work including:

• Investigating or implementing cryptographic algorithms
• Designing data handling software
• Evaluating the security aspects of software and protocols
• Demodulating and recovering digital signals
• Assessing and advising on the suitability of cryptographic products
• Costing the implementation of sample subroutines on a massively parallel computer
• Modelling statistical patterns in huge datasets

Opportunities exist to develop deep expertise in a particular specialism, or to evolve into a broader leadership and management role. Whichever path you follow, you’ll receive continuous professional development and the support and shared knowledge of the broader team.

At the very minimum you should have, or expect to obtain a 1st or 2nd class honours degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or other subject with a significant mathematical content. We call for creative thinkers with the ability to communicate, and the willingness to learn.
