Main
purpose of this role
To assist in the
provision of a legal, efficient, high quality specialist prison pharmaceutical
service which reflects national and local policy and priorities. To take
into account the high level of security that must be maintained at all times
and that is the prime objective of the prison as a whole. Within these
boundaries, to promote the health and safety of staff and prisoners and provide
a clinical service to those with specific healthcare needs, with a focus on
those with mental health issues. To ensure compliance with the Code
of Ethics, professional guidelines and continuing professional development
requirements of the RPSGB (Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain).
Key
Roles
·To assist in the
day-to-day running of the pharmacy department, ensuring work is completed
within required time limits as set by the running of the prison.
·To assist in the
development and improvement of the pharmacy service within the prison
framework.
·To ensure that all
prescriptions are clinically appropriate and meet all necessary legal
requirements.
·To encourage and
maintain strong lines of communication with other members of the healthcare
team.
·To be involved in
pharmacy clinics to prisoners, offering minor ailment advice and treatment to
improve access to healthcare information and reduce GP waiting lists. At the
direction of healthcare staff to use the clinics to provide medicines use
reviews and clinical reviews.
·To provide advice, as
appropriate, to staff and prisoners.
·To ensure that all
legal, ethical and statutory frameworks are adhered to in relation to medicines
and their use.
·To keep up-to-date
with current Pharmacy knowledge by means of continuing professional development
within the RPSGB guidelines.
·To attend weekly
consultant-led mental health in-reach meetings, and maintain clinical profiles
on in-reach patients, in order to provide clinical, pharmaceutical and
formulary advice to prisoners with mental health issues.
·To provide training
and education of nurses at on any pharmacy related issues, both on clinical
topics and local policies, as requested by the Head of Pharmaceutical
Services.
·To supply stock to
treatment rooms across the prison, and to ensure the appropriate type, quality
and quantity of stock is provided in a timely manner.
·To review all medicine
charts on a regular basis, tidying and clarifying information,
using clinical IT systems if necessary.
- To encourage adherence to local drug
formulary and to suggest suitable alternatives if appropriate. To be
aware of the protocols involved if deviation from it is felt necessary.
Role
of Department
The Pharmacy department
is committed to provide a safe and high quality prison pharmacy service. The Prison has a stock “top-up” service on numerous treatment rooms. Advice is provided to patients and the multidisciplinary
team, which includes GP’s, consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, and
podiatrists. The department also ensures good lines of communication with
non-medical staff such as Prison Officers and administration staff.
