Our client is seeking an experienced senior or lead e-learning instructional designer to successfully lead the Instructional Design of ongoing projects; ensuring products are delivered of the expected quality to time and to budget. Often leading multiple projects simultaneously, the key role of the Senior Instructional Designer is to direct and support others in successfully storyboarding and implementing courses, rather than doing this task themselves.
Key Responsibilities
*Attend project kick-off meetings with customers.
*Analyse the Instructional Design requirements of the customer and provide appropriate advice/consultancy to them on different ways of achieving the project goals.
*Guide the customer on the appropriate actions they need to take to ensure the success of the project and warn them about possible risks and suggest possible mitigations
*Fully specify the Instructional Design requirement and the solution including the specification of all core functionality, learning screens (templates) and overall learning design. Ensure the specified solution is feasible within the time, budget and other constraints of the project.
*Brief Instructional Designers and Scriptwriters before Content Meetings to ensure they are successfully undertaken and possibly accompany them on some content meetings.
*Brief Instructional Designers and Scriptwriters to ensure they successfully implement the overall training design in individual course storyboards.
*Review/mentor Instructional Designers and Scriptwriters as they script to ensure the learning design is captured in the storyboards and ensure that quality criteria are met.
*Review final scripts to ensure quality criteria are met.
*Have any necessary customer conversations to deal with issues or problems as they arise during the project (e.g. scope creep or issues with script quality) and look for resolutions acceptable to all parties.
*Creatively problem solve issues as they arise to support the success of the project.
*Be ultimately responsible for the Instructional Design quality of all e-learning products on a project.
*To play a full role in identifying opportunities for improvement, for ensuring compliance to good ID practice and to support in the education and development of junior instructional designers/scriptwriters.
*Identify potential issues with the ID process and suggest improvements
*Ensure storyboards are produced to accepted resource metrics
*Ensure storyboard quality is maintained as per in-house standards
*Take part in coaching/mentoring activities with Instructional Designers and scriptwriters during projects but also on an informal, daily basis.
*Suggestions to improve Instructional Design, e.g. suggestions of new activities, new learning screens (templates), new conceptual approaches, etc
*Look for possible efficiency gains using new processes or technology, if appropriate.
*Support the Head of Instructional Design in day-to-day management duties.
*Supporting the overall success of the organisation and taking additional responsibility for the success of projects (i.e. not just being responsible for the Instructional Design).
*Participate in sales activities, e.g. supporting sales teams in customer meetings, coming up with ideas for new sales bids, helping to write sales bids, providing educational materials for use by the sales team.
*Support project managers in running projects, perhaps taking on deputy project manager duties if required. Gradually moving to having a full-time job split of Senior Instructional Design and Project Management (perhaps a 70:30 split).
*Take an active role in problem-spotting and risk analysis on individual projects to ensure their success. Discussing with Project Managers and other Project Leads to ensure a project stays on track and coming up with appropriate solutions/ideas for issues or to seize opportunities.
