Summer internship – Extreme Blue
£15,000 (pro rata)
Location - Near Winchester, Hampshire
What is IBM Extreme Blue?
IBM Extreme Blue is no ordinary summer internship. How does 12 weeks running your very own micro business in IBM sound? You’ll be part of a team consisting of 4 students (1 business and 3 technical) where you’ll develop the technology and business plan that will bring a new product to life for IBM.Extreme Blue isn’t for the faint hearted. The projects are real and it’s about pushing boundaries. Are you up for the challenge?
The roles
Extreme blue is made up of teams of 4 students – 3 technical and 1 business.
Business role
As a business student on Extreme Blue, you will be expected to take on the role of project manager as your other three team members will be technical students.
You’ll be responsible for keeping your team on target and working to schedule so that objectives are met, on time. Most importantly though, you will be responsible for liaising with our clients to work out what is required by potential customers for the product you are working on.It’s then down to you to make sure that as a team you are developing a solution that meets the client’s needs.
This is a really exciting role that holds a lot of responsibility, and it’s a fantastic and unique opportunity to really make your CV stand out from the crowd.
Technical role
As a technical student, Extreme Blue is a dream come true. You’ll have the opportunity to work on an innovative project where you’ll be developing a technology based solution that meets your customers’ needs.
You’ll need to apply your technical aptitude to design, architect, develop and test your product among your technical peers, while never losing sight of your customers and the end goal.
Through Extreme Blue, you can build on your existing IT knowledge and skills but you’ll also learn a wealth of new skills – not to mention the fact that you’ll find yourself working with leading edge technologies and alongside some of the best people in the industry.
The projects
Take a look at some of the amazing, world enhancing projects that Extreme Blue students have worked on…
SiSi (Say it, Sign it)
SiSi is nothing short of a revolution in communication between the deaf and hearing. Able to translate speech into British Sign Language it uses an avatar (a digital ‘person’) to sign what is being said in a presentation, meeting, television programme or even a voicemail message. Designed specifically for times when a human signer is unavailable it relies on a speech recognition programme. The RNID has already given SiSi its approval – this really is a life changing innovation.
Switch
By 2020, Government plans are that every household in the UK will be equipped with a ‘Smart Meter’; microprocessor-enabled power meters capable of remote, automated readings. With mandated smart meters, consumers will be looking for additional value attached to the new technology that they may well be paying for. In addition to developing a front-end interface for users, our 2009 team ‘Switch’ have written a response to the government consultation paper on smart metering and are investigating other services that potentially could be offered to users based on monitoring their energy use patterns. This really is forward thinking!
What we look for
You should be attending university and on target for a 1st or 2:1 honours degree). You’ll need to be in your penultimate year and be eligible to work in the UK for the duration of the placement.

What you’ll get out of it

There’ll be a team of experienced IBMers around who will be dedicated to supporting your development along the way.You will be working with some of the best minds in the industry so you will be learning from the best and if you want to reach their level, this is the place to start.
You’ll learn how to present your ideas, liaise with clients, talk confidently in front of large groups and build relationships with influential people.
