TITLE
This job is yours to develop and could variously be described as: Transformer Designer; Power Transformer Designer; Converter Transformer Designer; HVDC Transformer Designer
LOCATION
The Transformer Designer could conveniently live in or near to Birmingham, Burton-on-Trent, Derby, Lichfield, Macclesfield, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Telford, Warrington or Wolverhampton. Where required, generous relocation assistance is available.
DURATION
The Transformer Designer role is a permanent post.
SALARY
The salary range for a Transformer Designer is typically £30k to £45k depending on competence, plus bonus & big company benefits.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
As a prospective Transformer Designer the more of the following “boxes” you can tick, the better is your chance of being selected for interview: -
·At least an HNC or equivalent qualification in Engineering, preferably Electrical.
·Good understanding of HV/EHV power systems and the application of transformers within them; specific knowledge of the design of Converter Transformers, as applied to HVDC or other applications would be advantageous.
·Excellent IT skills.
·Excellent written and spoken English.

ROLE
This is much more than transformer design!
Yes, you will be working from functional specifications and/or in conjunction with your internal system design engineers and/or your Customers’ engineers, in order to understand your Customers’ performance requirements and to convert these into cost-effective and efficient sets of internal manufacturing designs, together with technical specifications for bought-out materials, plant and services. And, where required, you will also provide technical support to your tendering, production, and testing teams.
But, you will also be part of the R&D team, reporting to the Technology Transfer Manager, not only at the sharp end of research, eg into ultra high voltage designs, but also providing design validation and other support, often face-to-face, to four, new or recently refurbished, transformer factories around the world, and sharing your knowledge with your global counterparts at international conferences and seminars.
This job therefore includes short-term (fully-expensed) overseas visits and possibly also the opportunity to take up a semi-permanent role in one of the new overseas factories.
