Sometimes changing jobs can seem daunting and it’s hard to know if you’re doing it for the right reasons, especially if you’re moving into a different sector to start a completely new career.
Our Totaljobs.com public sector survey found when it came to changing your career, money plays a big part in your decision. The vast majority (70%) said they’d move to the private sector for a better salary.
When it comes to convincing you to change jobs, what would persuade you? Take a look at some of the answers you gave us…
Self fulfilment 36.17%
The most popular answer, it seems that just being happy and fulfilled in a job is more important to you than anything else. Fulfilment means something different to everyone, from a decent wage and good working conditions to using your full potential or just some making friends among your colleagues, self fulfilment allows you to get the most out of your job.
This was backed up when 53% of you told us that you’d move to the private sector if it offered better working conditions.
Dream job offer 27.77%
While it’d be lovely to wake up one morning and find that your dream career has magically fallen into your lap (we wish it worked that way, too), sometimes you just have to work hard and wait for the dream to become a reality (sorry about that, just think how great that phone call will be when you get it, though). So coming in a close second place in our survey, you told us that a dream job offer would make you leave your current job.
Enhance skills 20.43%
Being able to learn new transferable skills or improving on existing ones also proved to be a popular reason for you to reconsider new career options.
Whether you work full-time or part-time, it’s never been easier to enhance your skills as flexible courses allow you to learn at your own pace, and often from the comfort of your sofa so you don’t even need to change out of your PJs.
Enhancing skills can also prove to be a helping hand if you’re after career development. Again, this is something which you told us was very important, as 50% would move to the private sector for it, with 71% of public sector workers happy to change roles if it meant better career prospects.
More training 8.65%
In our survey we found that you’re far from lazy with the opportunity to have more training convincing you to change careers.
Every boss wants their employees to understand their job and do it properly, so training is not only beneficial to you but it’s great for your employer. The more training you have, the better and happier you’ll be at your job, making it win/win.
Although you don’t necessarily have to change careers to be offered more training, it’s always worth asking your current boss before you start job hunting. If you work in a company with over 250 employees, it’s actually your legal right to request certain types of training (as long as you’ve been with them for over 26 weeks).
More free time 3.71%
Nobody wants to live in the office so it’s no surprise that extra free time plays a part in career choice. Whether you spend it with the family, use it as a chance to do some extra study or just hang out with your friends, having free time is crucial as over-working yourself is bound to make you ill or a right misery guts.
So now you’ve shopped around and seen what others would move careers for, are you sticking with what you’ve got or taking it back for something better?
