Sex and the City: Cosmopolitan career advice

Oh yes, it's here. The Sex and the City phenomenon has finally hit cinema screens.

Even if you're not a fan, you'll have been hard pressed to avoid the hype surrounding the release of one of Hollywood's most anticipated movies. If you weren't aware of the occasion, it explains the crush of women tottering around town in their Manolo Blahniks and sipping cosmopolitans in a frenzy of excitement.

And while we follow the exploits of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte as they lead their fabulous lives, there's more we can draw on than top fashion tips...

Fabulous at forty
We join the girls five years on and in their fabulous forties. Things have changed since they first graced our screens, but it's all about being empowered and knowing your own mind.

The focus on Carrie in particular revolves around her wedding. Featured in Vogue magazine as the 'last single girl', the theme picks up on a common insecurity - and one that's just as relevant to work and job seeking; age.

Totaljobs.com often hears from jobseekers over forty looking to change careers. The girls simply provide inspiration to go ahead - after all, you've got the advantage in terms of skills and experience and you're likely to be less headstrong and impulsive, although Samantha may disprove that theory! It's all about how you pitch yourself, and being smarter than those recruiters who can't see past the number on the page.

Friends will be friends
Sex and the City's key theme is the friendship shared by these four very different women. Carrie may be the centrepiece, but it's important to recognise the support network the girls provide each other. One telling quote refers to Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda:

"...there were three mirrors Samantha couldn't avoid."

Others might tell you want to hear, but your friends will provide honest insight. If you're having a career crisis - ask your mates for advice. It's likely one or more will have been in a similar situation, and they'll give you fresh perspective. Your friends won't pull any punches on reviewing your CV. They'll tell it like when it is when it comes to your interview outfit, and they'll happily run you through a harsh interview role play that'll prepare you for anything!

It's all about balance
The final thing to take away is the importance of work:life balance. With the exception of Charlotte, all of the girls struggle with this at some point.

Whether its Miranda neglecting her personal relationship, Samantha's personal and professional life becoming one and the same, or Carrie's professional image taking over her wedding plans; it all tells us the same thing. It's a hard act to balance, and tipping the scales too much in one direction can easily become the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Take a step back and consider what's really important, and remember that work is just that - work. Everyone has a different balance; it's just a case of finding yours.

Cocktails and dreams
We can all dream of leading such fabulous lives. And while we might not be able to splash out on Prada when we feel like it or have a walk-in closet the size of a small country, drawing on aspects of the Sex and the City experience could work wonders. It's not all about shoes you know...

Now, anyone for cocktails?
