Networking dos and don'ts

Do:

• network with people who can influence positive outcomes for you;
• put effort into projecting a professional image at all times;
• keep in touch with your contacts, checking messages and emails regularly;
• get back to people when you say you will;
• make sure your contacts know what you expect from them;
• try to leave jobs on good terms.

Don't:

• network with people you don't know;
• network with people who could let you down;
• try to network with people with whom you've got no common interest or shared experience;
• let people you work with in on your darker secrets;
• use your network for gossip;
• lose touch with your contacts.
