Over the last 50 years I’ve been interviewed a lot, and I’ve interviewed a lot of people. Here are my tips for a successful interview:

1. First impression

You live or die in the first 20 seconds. Be likeable, come across well. People like to buy from people they like.

2. Do your research

Amazingly so many people don’t do any research about the business, service, or product that the interviewer is involved with. It’s key! You want to show you know what you’re talking about. One question from the employer about his business, and you’re not able to answer? Frankly, you’re dead in the water.

3. Structured answers

When you’re answering a question, do it slowly, clearly and in a structured fashion. You’re in the communications business now and you’ve got to get it right.

4. Tell your story

The interviewer asks, “What have you been doing?” You’re going to give them a story – only you know what you’ve been up to, tell it well, tell it positively, but be honest.

5. Be yourself

You are you, so don’t put on an arrogant act as though you’ve already got the job. Equally don’t put on a pleading act as though you desperately need it. Instead, put on an appearance of a sensible, experienced person who is going to add value to that business.

If you listen to all those little tips, your chances of landing that job are much enhanced. Good luck to you!
