Our client, a global wildlife conservation charity, is looking for a new Press Officer to join its busy in-house media team to lead on PR activity for the fundraising and commercial activities of their world-renowned organisation.

Our client runs both two zoos, and carries out ground-breaking research for wildlife and puts this research into action in conservation projects in more than 50 countries around the world. This global work is impossible without the funds generated through their fundraising and commercial projects.

Job Overview: 
The Press Officer will report into the Media Manager, and work with the wider communications, fundraising and commercial teams at the Society, to deliver positive, inspiring and impactful news coverage to raise the profile of the charity to key audiences. They will be responsible for increasing recognition of the organisation's charitable status, raising the profile of fundraising campaigns and activities, and promoting their commercial ventures, to help drive funds, increase participation in the attraction's experiences and campaigns, while raising awareness for their conservation work.

Working with the broader PR and Publications team this post will also play a key role in formulating and implementing an ongoing programme of celebrity support activity to drive media coverage for the organisation's key commercial and fundraising messages. The Press Officer must be a self-starter with a keen eye for identifying potential news stories, respond quickly to reactive opportunities and have a thorough understanding of the needs and workings of national, local and online media.

Person Specification:

Ideally the successful applicant will:

  • Be educated to a degree level or equivalent qualification or have an equivalent level of proven work experience in a media or wider communications environment.
  • Have previous and proven experience of media engagement, ideally within an in-house team.
  • Have solid background knowledge of fundraising and retail media and ideally a strong list of contacts are highly desirable.
  • Be able to demonstrate their ability to spot and shape a potential story but most importantly have the discipline and organisational skills to make it happen to agreed deadlines.
  • Have exceptional communication skills and also have the ability to work with non-media focused divisions motivating them to support the broader communication goals and understand their importance without being obtrusive.
  • Be creative and understand that given the competitive communications environment, the organisation's current profile and relatively small budgets there is a strong need to be innovative and distinctive.
  • Have the ability to apply clear thinking and logic to the communications process.
  • Have an interest in animal conservation and science.

Please note: This is a full-time, permanent position where the post holder will work a basic 37.5 hours and will be based in London, NW1. The role may require occasional travel to our client's sister-site near Dunstable, LU6 and occasional evening and weekend work.
